FROM A MINERAL TO A GEMSTONE TO AN INVESTMENT GEMSTONE

There are over 4,200 well-known kinds of minerals (and the number is growing). The most common minerals on the surface are feldspar, quartz, and mica. These minerals used in the jewelry trade are common and form various types of stone (from basalt and granite to rarer solid rocks).

Rare, small (accessory) minerals are known for their collectible value and generally not known in the gemstone market, since they are seldom worth polishing for faceting. Thus the most well-known gemstones that we offer are neither among the very common minerals, nor the very rare minerals not worth polishing. Once again, only a handful of them are suitable as investments. That is because of their 4Cs as well as their beauty in combination with rarity.

Unfortunately these gemstones are only found in a few places–which explains their rarity, in contrast to the over 4,200 kinds of mostly unknown minerals. The fact that rubies, multicolored sapphires, and emeralds are the most well-known representatives of the gemstone world and yet are found only in a few areas has its reasons. And the fact that the well-known, high-quality olivines, tourmalines, and spinels are found in small areas far apart from each other also has its reasons.

After the formation of the earth, gemstones were not formed everywhere, and not at all times, either. Small, rare, and different deposit areas are the proof that the earth produces special gemstones only under very particular conditions. These rare discovery sites can be assigned to only a very few ages and are usually continents away from each other.

And exactly that is the intriguing part: The gemstones of this world were formed when the Earth's mantle and crust movements, as well as external influences from the outside, all fit together perfectly in order to form these particular gemstones. Thousands of kilometers from each other, small areas of gemstones formed over some millions of years, which we humans know today as extraction areas only a few meters in diameter. After hundreds of millions of years passed, additional gemstones were created in other, different locations.

Today we can understand this process only in part, however we know that certain types of gemstones were only produced in a few places thanks to the right combination of chemistry, temperature, and pressure and that they have remained accessible for humankind today. Through exploration, we are able to find these gemstones and process them into attractive gemstones for collectors and investors. Nevertheless there are not fewer scientists in this area, because the remaining extraction areas are being more intensely researched, and the prices for gemstones, thanks to their rarity, allow–from a financial perspective–for the exploration of ever-smaller areas for gemstones. That means that mined gemstones will inevitably become even more rare.

Thanks to technology we are witnessing a golden age of mining and grinding, and geological maps are detailed enough to comb through even the smallest areas for promising gemstones.

With the current knowledge from production, grinding quality, quality of the polished stones, and the tightening market, investors today can put on a “golden glove." The right partner, who knows all of these facets and is not just seeking personal gain, is absolutely essential–knowledge is the guarantee for value retention and the natural increase in value of these timeless stones.
