A gemstone is characterized by the factors of naturalness, beauty, and rarity. This sequence can be also regarded in ascending order as increasing in value. Naturalness is a prerequisite for us here. There are many natural, but unattractive stones. A gemstone has to be beautiful, but it can also be relatively common.
Variety in gemstones
Turning to rarity: A value is substantial if we have comparability. With higher rarity the comparability sinks, but is sufficient to have even just a few absolute values in order to then produce a comparison. This value will be higher, and often exponentially higher, the rarer the stone is.
WHAT EXACTLY IS RARITY?
This is the geological rarity of the type of stone–that is, the mineral–as well as the 4Cs of this particular kind of stone, taken in combination. The rarer even one of the 4Cs of a stone is, which is largely geologically determined, the higher its investment potential, as long as the stone is beautiful. This beauty depends on the color, hardness (i.e., polishing), and the refraction of light (indirectly, its sparkle).
Investment gemstones have to meet the requirements of a gemstone, however they also have to go far beyond with a rare 4C combination and broad acceptance in the market–they have to be "beautiful" in other words. In addition, large potential passive marketing, historic value, and in certain circumstances the country of origin will also play a role.

THE ABILITY TO BE CERTIFIED IS OF INCREASING IMPORTANCE FOR INVESTMENT GEMSTONES.
Laboratories that issue findings reports on stones have to be equipped with current and state-of-the-art equipment. Further, gemstones should not be able to be easily manufactured synthetically, or their detection should not be especially involved. E.g., synthetic emeralds are sold, but they are generally easy to detect. Thus, a certain level of security remains in the market.
